Welcome to the complete rewrite of my first blog. My original draft was fine, but it felt flat. Then James gave us a workshop on how these blogs should feel like stories. So instead of giving you a bullet-point version of my journey, I want to tell you the story of how I ended up living on the U.S.–Mexico border as a volunteer with the Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) program. The YAV program is a year of volunteer service through the Presbyterian Church (USA), with sites all around the world. I first learned about it during a delegation trip here with Queens University. At that point in my life, I had stepped away from religion. Before college, spirituality felt distant and unimportant to me. But Queens opened doors I never expected. I attended events about faith and spirituality, learned about the history of religion, and little by little, I began to see it differently.
